Meet our Assistant Director of Orchestras
Gracie Ibemere is a double bassist, who began her musical studies in the public school system of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since selecting the double bass, she has completed a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas-Austin, a master’s degree at the University of Houston, and most recently graduated in May 2018 with a doctorate from the University of Houston in double bass performance and a minor in musicology. Dr. Ibemere has studied with Robin Smith, George Speed, DaXun Zhang, and the spectacular Dennis Whittaker, principal double bassist of the Houston Grand Opera. She has been a clinician in the greater Houston area since her move from Austin in 2012. Her private lesson studio has seen many region, solo and ensemble, and UIL successes. During her studies she served as principal double bassist of the university symphony orchestra, ballet orchestra, and opera orchestra. In addition to performing in academic concerts, Dr. Ibemere has played in regional symphonies, churches, and chamber groups. Dr. Ibemere attributes her successes in the music world to eight hour practices and more importantly the lessons and pedagogy of Dennis Whittaker, from whom she learned to love teaching. As the new assistant director she looks forward to working with young musicians and continuing the tradition of classical music and the love of all music.
